4 Powerful Ways to Overcome Fear of Uncertainties
Humans are all short sighted. None can see
beyond the present, neither can any confidently and correctly determine the
future except by prediction. As a result, the fear of uncertainties of the
future, change of weather, or fulfillment of God’s promises becomes common in
the human race both in religious, political, and otherwise. We have seen people
we thought to have extremely bright future, turning to nothing at the end.
Persons that were one time very wealthy overtaking by abject poverty later in
their lives. We have also experienced goals that were believed to have 95%
success turning into total failure and vice versa. All these events we have
seen, heard and believed. The result? Fear of uncertainties.
Fear of the future happening which we cannot
see nor know anything about keeps us most times from striving for a better life
or anything good for our lives. Fear of uncertainty about the result of
intending actions, goals and ambitions are common in everyone’s life. It is the
reason why we often have “Plan B” in our every plan.
Can God’s purposes for my life still be
fulfilled? Can I still achieve this? or that? Can I still get there? Or make
it? Whatever be your question, there is only one answer to them_ “Yes! You can”
The devil uses what we cannot see neither do we
know to attack our faith in God. In respect to that, the scripture commands; “…
Know the truth and the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32). To overcome the
power of fear of uncertainties we must consider that:
1. God is a Mysterious God
Most of the time fear of uncertainty grips us
because it seems things are not happening the way we think they ought to happen.
It is not happening the normal way. Men believe in fact and ways that are
tested and proven to be good but we God is not a man; “For my thoughts are not
your thoughts, neither are my ways yours declares the Lord” Isa. 55:8
Consider this, God promised to give many
descendants to Abraham through Isaac. Then He commanded that Isaac be killed as
a sacrifice before a child of view, which is a contradiction. God’s will may
appear to contradict his promise to you, but make sure you know His will and follow it.
Leave the fulfillment of the promises to Him. Do no assume the obligation of
reconciling His promise and His will. “…lean not unto thine own understanding”
(Prov. 3:5). You can never be disappointed when you follow as He leads and
leave the result to Him. Did He actually bless Abraham through Isaac as
promised? That you can tell better.
2. Resisting the Devil
The devil succeeded in deceiving Eve because
she failed to resist him and his subtle words. We have not fallen because the
devil tells us that the uncertainty of the future may not be for our good but
because we allow those words to stay and get nourished in our mind. The devil
will do all he can to confuse and deceive us concerning the fate of our future,
but it is up to us to believe and accept the fear he is offering or rebuke him;
“Rebuke the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
Nehemiah was a man of like fate who understands
the tricks of fear of uncertainties as a weapon of Satan; “For they all made us
afraid saying, their hands shall be weakened from the work that it be not
done…” (Nehemiah 6:9). But I like the way he concluded it all; “But I said,
should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to
save his life? I will not go!” (vs 11). We can either choose to listen to the devil
or to resist him and hold unto all that God has promised us.
3. Prayer
We most times fall into temptation because we
are not praying. “Watch and pray lest you enter into temptation.” (Mark 14:38)
declares the Lord. When we pray, we set our spirit on fire and become too hot
and complicated for the devil. He finds it most hard to overcome a prayerful
believer than he finds in a less prayerful believer. Moreover, prayer helps us
to become confident on God’s faithfulness as His words of comfort continue to
come to us during prayer. Consistent prayer is one weapon the devil cannot use
the fear of uncertainty to overcome. No wonder the scripture tells us in James
5:16 “The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much”.
4. Having Faith in God
Uncertainties may be prevailing but that
doesn’t mean God has failed or cannot accomplish that which He has promised.
Consider Abraham. God’s first promise was made to Abraham when he was
seventy-five years old (Gen. 12:14). The
promises was three fold (i) to give him a son, (ii) to give him a land
inheritance, (iii) to bless all the nations of the earth through him. The first
part of the promise came twenty five years later in the birth of Isaac. The
second part came about five hundred years later in the exodus from Egypt. The
third part of the promise came almost two thousand years later in the birth of
Jesus Christ.
God’s time table is not the same as ours. What
He has promised He will certainly perform for you as well as He did for Abraham.
Do not permit time to challenge your faith. Years passed and God’s promise of a
son born to Abraham and Sarah was not fulfilled even to the extent that they
were too old but at the end God’s promise still came to pass.
Whether we are certain about the future or not,
God’s purposes for our lives must be made manifest. And we if we must be
certain about the future then we must consider that God is not a man that He
should lie neither is He a son of man that he should repent. He tells in Isaiah
55:11; “So is the word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me
empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I
sent it.”
Looking at the present circumstances and trying
to determine the future is what the devil often used to distract us from God’s
faithfulness. So I urge you to stop looking at what you are seeing and focus
your mind on God’s words; “For we walk by faith and not by sight”. The
scripture has never told us that blessings will follow those that see but those
that believe. It is only through faith in God that we can overcome the fear of
uncertainties. Believe that there is nothing the Lord cannot do. In anger He
asked the doubting Abraham; “Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the time
appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life …” (Gen.
18:14).
May God give you more grace to overcome your fears
in Jesus Name. Amen
