God's Followers
Following Christ
It is very easy serving God when everything around us is
fine. It is also very comfortable serving God the way everybody around us worshiping. The otherwise is the stand point to which our confession as Christ’s
followers become effective.
I believe we all accepted and confirmed Christ to be the
head of this union and that is why we accepted Him to be our lord and master.
This covenant was in agreement with the hierarchical order of the church: “And He is before all things, and in Him all
things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church. (Colossians
1:17-18). There is a confirmation in Ephesians 5:22-25. Where the head enters,
there we will follow too. That is what makes us followers.
The Switch
Rise and fall has become a part of our spiritual
struggle. This is not encouraging. It shows less commitment. It has so much
been redesigned by Satan that it victims hardly want to avoid. For Christ
today, for the world tomorrow and so it goes. The result today is ineffective
church instead of a glorious church. Backsliding has been trimmed and reshaped
that you are still in the church but no more a part of the church.
The world today is invaded with the gospel yet sin overwhelmingly increases. This is because of the ineffective followers of Christ. There are people the devil doesn’t need to struggle hard before they fall into sin; they are like the electric switch in the hand of Satan. Watch, they are the vast part of the church. “Nevertheless, the solid foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, the lord knows who are His…” 2 Timothy 2:19.
Backsliding in a simple sense means going backward from initial forward movement. Our quest to have eternal life can only be achieved only when we follow Jesus faithfully not minding the storm. “Then Jesus said to His disciples, if anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” Matt. 16:24. Once you have chosen to follow Jesus you have surrendered everything to Jesus, including your wisdom and pride at the foot of the throne of grace.
The arch-enemy as followers of Christ often have been
SELF (what about me?). It is inherent as every one of us desires better things
for his own self. This is not always wrong but can be wrong when it is not done
according to Jesus principles and command. Therefore a backslider is not one
that has stopped attending church services as we mostly see but one that has
stopped following after the command of the master (Jesus).
There is a reason why Jesus was nailed to the cross; “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up that whosoever believeth
in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:14). This means
that our eyes and attention must be fixed on Jesus that was crucified on the
cross in order to be saved. What was Jesus doing on the cross? Pointing men to
salvation, loose focus of those spread arms and you have lost the truth, the
way and your life (John 14:6). Without focus you cannot follow the master. That
is how people backslides, how men of God gave up the faith to find life outside
Jesus where there is no life. For whatever reason that will cause you to turn
back from following Jesus, the penalty paid by Lot’s wife should be considered
seriously.
A weary mind may ask; “Can we still see Jesus and follow
Him?
Absolutely, we follow Him daily in His book (the
scripture); “Your word is a lamp to my
feet, and a light to my path.” (Psalms 119:105).
