6 Qualities of a Godly Follower

It is very common seeing people bragging to be followers and servants of Christ, yet traits found in them helps the dying to die. The question can be; what can be found in a man before he can be called God’s servant? Are there special attribute to be possessed by someone to be called a child of God?
Very correct, before you can firmly declare your stand for Jesus, you should first compare and contrast the following qualities of a godly follower to your life.

Honesty

“But the hour cometh and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship Him.” John 4:23

Perhaps, the most important virtue of a godly follower is honesty. This quality builds credibility. An effective follower does not say what he is not. When we hide under the shadow of hypocrisy, we make our assigned task difficult, less pleasurable and unrewarding.

Being true to ourselves is a manifestation of Christ-likeness. It helps us to stand for Him when dilemmas expect us to fall or deny Him. A godly follower declares his support for his leader and stand in that regard even though a rather important thing came up. If for no reason, at least for the fact that he had personally told his master that he will stand for Him. Such is a true follower.

Selflessness/Self denial

“Then He said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” Matt. 16:24.

Selflessness is one great challenge facing the Christendom. Everyone works for his benefits. It is challenging because truly speaking, that is what we live for. Just working for a better tomorrow. This is not wrong when we expect the reward from God Himself and not from man even though he will pass through man.
Becoming a member of God’s family implied you counting your cost concerning things you may possibly lose as stated by the master Himself in Luke 14:26-33; “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple …whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple.” God is raising an army with love and obedience as their only weapon. In God’s family, no one knows anything, neither does anybody forces anything. Everything is done at the master’s will.

Obedience/Loyalty

"If you love me, you will obey my command". John 14:23

This is just like selflessness. If anyone has seen the followers of a politician during campaigns, you will notice there is a high degree of respect to ambition. When the boss says “I want to be the governor of the state” loyalists says “let’s launch a campaign.” Good followers don’t oppose their master’s will. Being Christ’s follower implies being submissive to God’s command. Followership is not complete if the master’s will is not done. Until we allow God’s will to be done by us and through us, we cannot claim we are on the lord’s side. If we do, we deceive ourselves.“Also, I heard the voice of the lord, saying; whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, here I am; send me.” Isaiah 6:8

Courage

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

The quest to pleasing God is always not an easy one but one filled with fights of doubt and uncertainties. The thought of tomorrow is really a problem because we cannot as humans paint an exact picture of tomorrow. So we often asked many questions with the phrase “what if”.

The only thing that keeps us going is the courage to keep pressing on even against the tide of life. Many of the time, the problems we face in our spiritual life are skillfully coated preaching, words or actions that look like actual words and ways of Christ but are not. If things are not working for a person, everybody around tend to throw stone at him. He is a coward and a mediocre. But is it always true? “False”.
When God’s plans and purposes for our lives are delaying, will it actually come to pass? Is often the big question. But good doing, courage and faith has the answer. They are our security.

Peter would have successfully walked on the sea to Christ and stand by Him in the troubled sea if only he overcame his fears and doubt (Matt.14:27-31). Others may have tried and failed in temptation. People that started with you may have dropped out but it takes courage for you to continue moving in that lonely path that looks like it has nothing to offer at the end.
A good follower must also be bold enough to accept fault or failure rather than pointing fingers. That is courage.

Learning

“So teach us to number our days, so that we can apply our heart unto wisdom.” Psalms 90:12

No good follower can ever please his master if he doesn’t learn of his ways. That you are in Christ does not mean you are spotless. There is a process called sanctification. This is the process whereby you learn to please and do the God’s will. This process comes either through pains or happiness but in whichever way, the most relevant thing is learn.

A good follower all the time seeks ways to improve his service so that his master will be happy with him. Learning is not restricted to just acquiring new knowledge, it also involve the application of what has been learnt. In fact learning is not complete unless what was taught is practiced. Learning to accept fault and turning from it is one big way of learning to be a flower of Christ. In fact that is the first step in Christianity. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourself.”  Declares James 1:22.

Communication

“Thou has given a banner to them that fear, thee, that it may be displayed, because of the truth. Selah.” Psalms 60:4

A follower without good communication skill will certainly not go far. We that are in Christ talks with God in prayer. Our prayers must be coated with obedience loyalty, love, reverence and fear to the Lord. These are what constitute a fervent prayer that will be effective. Without them our prayers go nowhere. (James 5:16). The quest for eternal life demands divine help which we ask for during prayers. All our burdens and problems, we take to the Lord in prayer, this is what shows our dependent on God; I look up to the hill, where cometh my help, my help comes from the Lord…” Psalm 121:1. When a follower does not know how to communicate with his leader, he will lack needed material for carrying out his job.

During election campaigns, apart from the regular campaign arranged by politicians, a good follower without being told campaign for his master in conversation among friends and colleagues and family in his immediate environments. Some people hide their gospel when they get to environment where people don’t know them to be Christians. A good follower pastes poster and banners of his master for people to see. He speaks wonderful things about his master everywhere and all the time so that people that did not believe may believe.
If for no reason, at least for the fact that his master is a faithful man. He will do everything in his manifestoes. If worldly followers can do this for their corrupt masters how much more, we that have the incorruptible Jesus as a master. Much is expected of us.

When we declare our followership to the lord Jesus Christ, He expects us to be all of these and even more; being committed and faithful to our promises and mission, being trust worthy and courageous no matter what comes our way. Above all, love fear and trust only in the saving power of the Almighty. Failure in these regards makes us enemies with Him.
